Actor David Duchovny of “The X-Files” fame has raised U.S. hackles with a recent beer ad in which he’s cast as a dreamer of all things Russia.
In the ad for Russian-made beer Siberian Crown, which is posted on YouTube, Mr. Duchovny says, “There is another country, where I got my family name from,and sometimes I wonder, what if things turned out differently — what if I were Russian?”
He’s then shown, with Russian rock music playing in the background, in various poses as a ballet choreographer, a cosmonaut, a rock star and ice hockey player. He’s also show taking part in a variety of Russian-style traditions, such as the banya, or steam bath.
He then summarizes: “Being Russian, I’d have many things to be proud of.”
Russia’s deputy prime minister linked to the ad on his Twitter account. But U.S.-based Globalpost.com wasn’t so adoring of the spot, opining that Mr. Duchovny seemed to have involved himself in a “poorly timed, nationalistic ad” just shortly after the Malaysian airline plane was shot down in Ukraine.
