Maine police responding in part to a call of “firecrackers” at a neighborhood in the southern part of the state instead found five dead bodies inside a home — a husband-wife couple and their three children.

The boys were ages 12 and 7; the girl, 4, The Associated Press reported.

The Portland Press Herald said one neighbor reported the sound of “firecrackers,” while another reported the father driving from the apartment and then returning just a short time later.

A murder-suicide is being investigated, one detective told the AP.

“All indications are that no one outside of the family was responsible for the deaths,” Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said. “These are not accidental deaths.”
