Bomb squad investigators shut down a portion of beach on Cape Cod to look at what vacationers claim was washed onto the shore — a live piece of artillery from World War II.
“I was excited,” said Liam Pheifer, 23, to the Cape Cod Times. “I wanted to take it home actually.”
The device was a 14 inch 10 millimeter round buried in wet sand, United Press International reported. Local police and firefighters were contacted by vacationers to look at the object, and subsequently, the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad was contacted and dispatched to the scene.
The portion of beach was in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.
State bomb experts detonated the object.
