Meriam Ibrahim, the Christian woman who was imprisoned and sentenced to death by Sudanese authorities for her religious beliefs, is now free and has touched down in Italy to be with her family.
Reuters reported that Ms. Ibrahim, 27, landed at Rome’s Ciampino airport.
Italian politician Lapo Pistelli, who accompanied the freed Ms. Ibrahim on her flight, sent out a picture on his Facebook page of Ms. Ibrahim and her two children, with the caption: “With Meriam, Maya, Martin and [Ibrahim’s husband] Daniel, a few minutes from Rome. Mission accomplished.”
Mr. Pistelli also said to The Daily Telegraph that the family was planning to fly into the United States in a few days, after meeting with Pope Francis.
Ms. Ibraham had been sentenced to death by Sudanese authorities for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, in a case that captivated the world.
