China-based McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants put a stop to using meat from the company, Husi Food Co., Ltd., after learning they were sold beef and chicken that had expired.
The government-run Xinhua News Agency said authorities had ordered the company to put a halt to operations, The Associated Press reported. Husi is now under investigation, AP said.
Dragon TV first reported that Husi — a company owned by OSI Group out of Aurora, Ill. — had repackaged meat that had hit its expiration date and slapped new stickers with different expiration dates on the packages. The meat was then sold to McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut chain restaurants, AP said.
McDonald’s Corp. and Yum Brands Inc., the company that owns KFC and Pizza Hut, are going forward with their own independent investigations, AP said.
