Rep. Luis Gutierrez told a National Council of La Raza crowd in Los Angeles that President Obama has assured him in conversations that his intent is to stop the widespread deportation of illegal Hispanics.
Mr. Gutierrez, Illinois Democrat and member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said Mr. Obama told members of the caucus during a private White House meeting that he would be “generous and broad” in his pursuit of amnesty-type policies and would do what he could to “stop the deportation of our people each and every day,” Breitbart reported.
Mr. Gutierrez characterized Mr. Obama’s past immigration actions as just a drop in the bucket of what should come.
“You gave us a down payment when you freed 600,000 DREAMers from deportation,” he said, Breitbart reported. “Now it is time for the president in the United States … [to] free the moms and dads of the DREAMers. And to go further. Be broad and expansive and generous.”
He also said that providing amnesty for 100,000 illegals was “not expansive” enough, calling for Mr. Obama to grant amnesty to “millions of our undocumented.”
Mr. Obama put in place the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals by executive order in 2012, giving temporary work permits and amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegals in the country.
