Gov. Terry Branstad acted on a proclamation he signed previously and kicked off a Christian event at the Capitol building, calling on fellow Iowans to pray and fast, much in the spirit of Founding Fathers.
His proclamation, signed earlier this year about a planned July 14 event, stated: “NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terry E. Branstad, as Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby invite all Iowans who choose to join in the thoughtful prayer and humble repentance according to II Chronicles 7:14 in favor of our state and nation to come together on July 14, 2014.”
So on Tuesday, they did, Raw Story reported — and the event last 11 hours.
Mr. Branstad said of his proclamation that it was “very much in line with the great tradition” that started back with George Washington. He then thanked those who attended and called on public officers to “follow God’s will,” Raw Story reported.
Iowa’s Lt. Gov. Kim Reynold also spoke and encouraged listeners to continue “standing up for our rights and for individual liberties,” Raw Story said.
The campaign — the “If 7:14” campaign — calls on believers to pray and repent every day at 7:14 a.m. It’s sponsored by the Iowa’s Family Leader group.
