Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 28, the soldier who was taken by Taliban militants and held prisoner for five years, will return to active military duty as early as Monday at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, The New York Times first reported.
Sgt. Bergdahl — who was recently freed when President Obama steered a prisoner exchange that sent five suspected terrorists to Qatar from Guantanamo Bay — will live among his fellow soldiers in the barracks, the New York Daily News reported. A pair of military officials will be on hand to help him acclimate to duty.
Questions still surround Sgt. Bergdahl’s capture, with his former military colleagues suggesting that he may have actually purposely walked off and met up with members of the Taliban. Army investigators say they have found no evidence of that.
The White House is still fielding fire for the prisoner exchange that led to Sgt. Bergdahl’s release.
