CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Critics of Duke Energy’s push to cut what it pays for rooftop solar energy plan to protest outside the Charlotte headquarters of the country’s largest electric company.
Members of the environment group Greenpeace, the NAACP and others are gathering Monday to say they want more done to encourage solar power, not less.
Duke Energy wants the North Carolina Utilities Commission to let the company pay for rooftop solar power what it pays for other types of generated power.
Owners of rooftop solar systems sign contracts with Duke Energy that allow them to sell surplus electricity for 11 cents per kilowatt hour, the same price households pay for electricity.
Duke says its generating costs are between 5 cents and 7 cents a kilowatt hour.
