LOGANSPORT, Ind. (AP) - Nine-year-old Abby Williamson is using one of the gifts she got for Christmas to give a gift to kids on the other side of the world.
The recent holiday provided the Caston fourth-grader with cases of the brightly colored elastic bands made by Creat-a-Loomz, which Abby and many other kids her age use to weave together and create elastic bracelets.
Not long after receiving the kits, Abby said she thought of the Fellowship Mission School, an orphanage in India run by Sam John. About each year or every other year, John and his family travel from India to visit churches in the area, including New Life Alliance Church in Logansport, which Abby and her family regularly attend.
Abby decided to make the bracelets, sell them for 50 cents each and then give the proceeds to the Fellowship Mission School.
“I really want to help people,” Abby told the Pharos-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1avfiFy ). “I love church and I really wanted to help (the orphans).”
In the month since Christmas, Abby’s skills have grown to allow her to finish a bracelet in about one to two minutes, she said, her fingers weaving the bands around one another during a demonstration.
Abby’s mother, Kristen Williamson, said she takes pride in her daughter’s decision and actions.
“I was so impressed with her willingness to spend time and effort for kids she’s never met who don’t have moms and dads,” Williamson said.
Williamson went on to say the Fellowship Mission School in India takes in school-aged children and can have 30 to 50 kids staying there at a time. Were it not for the orphanage, many of them would be subject to human trafficking, she said.
“He’s a very, very neat man,” Williamson said of John. “He has a heart for children, a heart for God.”
While so far Abby’s customers haven’t ranged beyond her circle of friends and family, anyone is welcome to purchase a bracelet by reaching out to Kristen Williamson at kristenwilliamson@live.com.
