Don’t mess with the U.S. flag in Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s jail cells — the infraction will get you a steady of bread and water.

“These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells. Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel,” the Arizona sheriff said in a statement. “It’s a disgrace to those who have fought for our country.”

Dozens of inmates in Mr. Arpaio’s jail cells are dealing with the disciplinary measure, Reuters reported.

According to Mr. Arpaio, the diet will last for seven days; repeat offenders will have 10 days added to their punishment.

If inmates aren’t happy with having the American flag in their jail cells, they also must deal with “The Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” playing over the intercoms at night, Reuters reported.
