RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Emergency vehicles and school buses will not be charged tolls that take effect on two Hampton Roads tunnels on Feb. 1.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe made the announcement Wednesday. He said it’s important for police and other emergency responders to have unfettered access to the Midtown and Downtown tunnels.
Tunnel employees also will be exempt from tolls when conducting official business.
Last week, McAuliffe announced that the initial toll rates on the tunnels will be cut by about half. The revenue will support a $2.1 billion project to provide a second Midtown Tunnel, upgrade the existing Midtown and Downtown tunnels and extend a freeway.
