A Latina actress scheduled to perform next month at the Brava Theater Center in San Francisco has been banned after she appeared in a campaign ad for tea party favorite Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.

Maria Conchita Alonso starred in a campaign ad for Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, who is seeking the Republican nomination for California governor, KPIX 5 reported.

She was supposed to perform in a Spanish-language version of “The Vagina Monologues,” produced by Eliana Lopez, wife of San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, but the backlash forced her to resign.

“We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately,” Mrs. Lopez told the station. “Of course she has the right to say whatever she wants. But we’re in the middle of the Mission [District]. Doing what she is doing is against what we believe.”

Miss Alonso is best known for her role alongside Robin Williams in the movie “Moscow on the Hudson.”

Leo Lacayo, a prominent San Francisco Latino Republican, said he thinks Alonso is being treated unfairly, the local station reported.

“It was a political ad, it was a funny ad,” he said. “That anybody would lose employment over what their political leanings are is absurd.”
