PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler is criticizing a Medicaid expansion report commissioned by the LePage administration.
Cutler told reporters at a news conference Tuesday the so-called Alexander Report contains made-up numbers and that the projections were made to serve a political purpose.
He said the report assumes that Maine’s poverty rate will grow at a level far beyond what other government agencies project.
Cutler said he would sign a Democratic bill to accept federal money to expand Medicaid, but he said the long-term goal for Maine would be universal health care.
The report says the expansion under the Affordable Care Act would cost the state $807 million over the first decade, even with the federal government footing the bill for the first three years.
