GILA BEND, Ariz. (AP) - The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two people accused of smuggling nearly a half-ton of marijuana but a third suspect remains at large.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says deputies on a drug task force responded to reports Saturday of smuggling activity in the desert south of Gila Bend.

Arpaio says deputies came across two people on all-terrain vehicles and another driving a Ford truck.

He says the truck contained bundles of marijuana, amounting to nearly 1,000 pounds.

Deputies have booked Martin Aguirre and Mark Huffine into a Phoenix jail on drug charges.

Authorities say the third suspect was able to flee into the desert.
