President Obama’s approval rating has sunk below 40 percent in a new poll and a majority of Americans disapprove of his recent move to grant temporary legal status to millions of people in the country illegally.

Thirty-nine percent of Americans approve of his job performance, compared to 52 percent who disapprove, according to the Bloomberg Politics poll.

And 56 percent disapprove of his recent move granting temporary legal status to some illegal immigrants in the country, compared to 39 percent who approve. The actions would grant more than 4 million illegal immigrants a three-year reprieve from deportation and grant them work permits to pursue jobs, as well as shield others from the threat of deportation, though they wouldn’t be able to legally apply for jobs in the country.

Overall, 37 percent approve of how Mr. Obama is handling the immigration issue, compared to 54 percent who disapprove.

Just 32 percent approve of how he’s doing in negotiating with the GOP majority in the House of Representatives, compared to 56 percent who disapprove. Mr. Obama is also underwater with the American people on how he’s handling a host of other issues: foreign policy, the economy, health care, and the budget deficit.

The survey of 1,001 adults was taken Dec. 3-5 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
