President Obama requested a review of all federal programs that allow state and local police and law enforcement agencies to purchase military equipment on Saturday.

According to a senior administration official, the president asked for the review in light of events in Ferguson, Mo., where police have been seen using tear gas and rubber bullets against unarmed protesters, CNN reported Saturday.

There have been increasing calls to halt the militarization of local police forces, and several members of Congress have expressed support in cutting funding for programs that allow the police to purchase military hardware from the Pentagon.
