OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A Senate panel has passed a bill designed to give state workers a pay raise and revamp how state employees are compensated.

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved the bill Thursday and sent it to the full Senate for consideration.

Republican Rep. Leslie Osborn of Mustang says the goal of her bill is to provide a raise of about 3 percent to the state’s lowest paid workers, with the goal of bringing state worker pay to within 90 percent of private-sector salaries for comparable jobs.

The raise would be the first in seven years for state workers the bill targets, although raises would be awarded using a merit-based system.

Osborn says the bill is part of broader budget negotiations.
