MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Former Wisconsin state Medicaid director Brett Davis, who left his state job in the middle of open enrollment to the federal health insurance exchange, is now working for nonprofit health insurer WPS Health Insurance.

The insurance company announced Davis’s hiring on Wednesday as the new vice president of provider relations.

Davis resigned from Gov. Scott Walker’s Department of Health Services as state Medicaid director in March.

His departure came as DHS was in the midst of transitioning roughly 75,000 off of the BadgerCare Medicaid program and adding new childless adults to the program.

Davis also previously served six years as a Republican in the state Assembly. He ran for lieutenant governor in 2010 but lost to Rebecca Kleefisch in the Republican primary.
