ST. LOUIS (AP) - There are too many fat cats out there, and Nestle Purina PetCare is trying to help.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1iptr5Q ) that the maker of Purina Cat Chow is seeking 100,000 cat owner signatures on a pledge by May 2. The pledge promises that the owners will assess their cat’s weight to determine if the animal is too heavy.

Purina says it will donate $50,000 to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention if the 100,000-signature goal is met.

The association estimates that 58 percent of the nation’s pet cats are overweight, but says most owners are unaware of the problem.
