CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - A former collections clerk for the city of Central Falls has pleaded no contest to a charge of embezzling $17,000 and been sentenced to home confinement.

Rhode Island’s attorney general announced Tuesday that 54-year-old Joyce Tager of Smithfield was ordered to serve six months of home confinement. Under the plea agreement, Tager paid full restitution, including $10,800 from her pension fund. Her pension benefits were also revoked.

Authorities say Tager, who worked in the finance office, received money from the municipal court clerk, destroyed the records of the transfer and then took the cash for personal use.

Police investigated after the city noticed discrepancies between the amount of money collected and deposits into the city’s bank account.
