JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A national anti-tax leader is urging Missouri Republicans to pass legislation to ban the payment of union fees as a condition of employment.
Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, sent a letter this week to state lawmakers saying Missouri risks being left behind economically if the proposal doesn’t pass. He wrote that lawmakers needed to help Missouri workers who are “beholden to whims of state unions.”
The bill, known to supporters as right to work, is a top priority of House Republican Speaker Tim Jones. The measure has been endorsed by a House committee but is awaiting action of the chamber floor.
Opponents argue it would limit the ability of unions to negotiate effectively on behalf of workers.
