COVINGTON, La. (AP) - The St. Tammany Parish government says it will sue former coroner Peter Galvan in state court to get back more than $200,000 in legal fees.
Parish spokesman Ronnie Simpson says this won’t affect U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan’s February order for Galvan to repay $193,388.
On Monday, the parish withdrew a request for her to approve an additional $208,000, saying it is going after that money in state district court. A news release says that will let it investigate the entire $1.2 million paid for attorney’s fees last year and determine what defended the coroner’s office and what defended Galvan personally.
Morgan sentenced Galvan in February to two years in prison for conspiring to steal money from the coroner’s office.
Galvan is to report to prison by Friday.
