Veterans bills approved by Nebraska lawmakers this year:

LB588 - Gives a hiring preference to veterans and the spouses of disabled veterans who apply for jobs with the state or a local government.

LB740 - Allows veterans and their families to qualify for in-state tuition if they have left active duty within the last two years, as long as they’ve established residency and registered to vote.

LB75 (folded into LB987) - Allows veterans to exempt part of their military retirement pay if they choose to live in Nebraska.

LB1087 - Gives a full homestead exemption to veterans who are receiving payments for a 100 percent, service-connected disability. Also would extend the benefit to widows and widowers of veterans who died as a result of a service-connected disability, if they haven’t remarried.

Bills headed toward final approval:

LB383 - Creates “Military Honor Plates” for veterans and active-duty service members, available in 2016.

LB737 - Shortens residency requirements for county veteran service officers from 5 years to 1 year.
