SWANTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s Health Department and Agriculture Agency are holding a meeting on plans to trap and test mosquitoes for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a mosquito-borne illness that killed two horses in Franklin County last summer.

The Health Department says the illness can also infect people, causing severe and sometimes fatal illness.

The information meeting takes place Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Swanton Village Complex.

Erica Berl, a state infectious disease epidemiologist, says residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and ask questions. She says there are actions people can take to reduce the risk of infection.

More information on mosquito-borne diseases in Vermont can be found on the Health Department’s web site at https://healthvermont.gov/index.aspx.
