NEW YORK (AP) - A former federal employee convicted for helping dozens of Long Island Rail Road retirees fill out bogus disability applications has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Marie Baran of East Meadow, Long Island, was sentenced Friday in Manhattan federal court. Her attorney says she will be appealing her conviction.
The former supervisor in an office of the federal Railroad Retirement Board was convicted of advising LIRR retirees how to fill phony disability claims.
Newsday (https://bit.ly/1dYS109 ) reports that 22 of 33 doctors, consultants and retirees convicted in the scheme have been sentenced.
The five years for the 66-year-old Baran was among the highest sentences imposed.
Two doctors who vouched for the phony claims were sentenced to eight years.
Many retirees have received probation.
