NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Company officials now say the job cuts at the news operations of Advance Publications in New Jersey and Pennsylvania will top 300.

The biggest reduction is occurring at The Star-Ledger in Newark, where it was announced Thursday that 170 jobs are being cut, including 40 in the newsroom.

News executives say layoffs are also occurring at the Ledger’s sister newspapers and online operations.

At The Express-Times of Easton, Pa., and its online partner, the company says 68 full- and part-time jobs are being cut, including 14 in news.

It’s all part of a major reorganization by the privately held Advance Publications as it seeks to cut costs.

Some employees are to be offered jobs at lower salaries at new companies being created as part of the consolidation.
