BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a Buckeye woman after several horses on her property were found sick and malnourished.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says 59-year-old Denise Denney was booked into jail Thursday on 13 counts of animal abuse.

Arpaio says Sheriff’s detectives, acting on a tip about abuse allegations, served a search warrant on Denney’s home on March 12.

Arpaio says authorities found nine horses with overgrown hooves and teeth that were filed down, making it impossible to chew food.

Deputies also found a 2-year-old Clydesdale that was at least 700 pounds underweight and another horse with lice.

Arpaio says jail inmates are caring for two of the horses and the other seven will be transported there.

It was not known if Denney had an attorney.
