MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia University and the greater Morgantown area are teaming up to become the state’s first officially recognized “Safe Community.”

The National Safety Council has created the “Safe Community” designation to promote safer communities. The council says the recognition helps bring together civic groups, local governments and businesses to promote the idea of safer communities.

WVU President Gordon Gee and local officials signed a letter this week committing them to submitting an official application within the next year.

Organizers say the WVU-Morgantown collaboration would be the first among 30 places in the U.S. that now claim the “Safe Community” title.
