MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - The head of the House Homeland Security subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence calls the decision to award a Pulitzer Prize in the NSA leaking case “disgraceful.”
Rep. Peter King spoke to The Associated Press after The Washington Post and The Guardian were awarded journalism’s highest prize.
The newspapers were cited Monday for revealing the U.S. government’s sweeping surveillance efforts.
Those reports were based on secret documents handed over by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.
King says the release of the documents endangered American lives. He likened it to someone reporting on the plans for D-Day ahead of the Allies’ invasion of Normandy in 1944.
The Long Island Republican says a reporter has a moral responsibility to not report sensitive information.
