MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The head of the Vermont School Boards Association says he’s unhappy with a portion of an agreement designed to address a growing shortfall in paying for retired teachers’ health care.
The Shumlin administration, state Treasurer Beth Pearce and a teachers’ union announced on Friday a deal in which each would contribute to a new fund designed to separate health costs from the teachers’ pension fund.
Steve Dale, executive director of the School Boards Association, says his group opposes a part of the deal that would require local school districts to pay a new annual health care fee of $1,000 for each educator hired after this July 1.
Dale says local school boards didn’t participate in promising teachers health coverage in retirement, and shouldn’t have to pay for it.
