SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) - Juan Cala boosted Cardiff’s hopes of staying in the Premier League by scoring in the second half to give his team a 1-0 win over Southampton.

The Spanish defender fired home a long-range shot in the 65th minute against the run of the play to put the relegation-threatened visitors three points from safety with four rounds to go.

Southampton, which is in eighth place and has little to play for, dominated possession for much of the game and came close to scoring when Gaston Ramirez hit the crossbar.

Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall also had to save efforts from Sam Gallagher and Nathaniel Clyne during a nervy finish for the visitors.

Cardiff is one point behind 18th-place Fulham and three behind Norwich.
