SOMERVILLE, N.J. (AP) - A retired central New Jersey police chief is back on the public payroll.

Richard Borden has been hired as fourth Somerset County undersheriff six months after he stepped down as police chief in Bridgewater.

Borden will be paid almost $90,000 on top of a pension of $105,000 a year. Borden also was entitled to a payout of more than $100,000 for unused sick and vacation time.

Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano tells the Courier News of Bridgewater (https://mycj.co/1er6Yc4 ) hiring retirees makes sense because they’re not entitled to costly health benefits and they bring a wealth of experience.
