MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont House committee has voted to raise the state’s minimum wage from its current $8.73 to $10.10 an hour in January, two years earlier than Gov. Peter Shumlin wanted.
Shumlin has been pushing a plan to increase the wage in stages to $10.10 per hour in 2017. But on Tuesday, the House General, Housing and Military Affairs Committee voted to go to that level beginning at the start of 2015.
The wage would then be indexed to increase annually from $10.10, according to an index tied to inflation.
The measure also calls for the minimum wage for tipped workers to be no less than half the regular minimum - on the theory that the balance would be made up for in tips.
