OPINION:
My husband and I have been small-business owners since 1983. In September 2010, we were audited by the Internal Revenue Service. The auditor told us that it would take one week to receive their findings. It wasn’t until February 2012, a year-and-a-half later, that we received a letter stating that we owed the IRS money (“Boehner on IRS: ’Who’s going to jail over this scandal?’” Web, May 15).
However, our accountant disputed the erroneous claim because the IRS had neglected to figure in that we were a Subchapter S corporation. The IRS admitted its mistake and the charges were dismissed. We owed them not one penny. But this didn’t take away from the fact that we were on pins and needles for a year-and-a-half while the IRS looked into our books searching for something to pin on us. They could find nothing. Incidentally, we are registered Republicans. In 2012, our prime subcontractor was audited. He is also a registered Republican.
