Fifty years after Charles Xavier gathered his first class of mutants together as the X-Men, the telepath-turned-team-builder has been killed by one of them.
The erstwhile teacher, who trained mutants in Marvel Entertainment’s X-Men comics through the years, was felled in the latest issue of “Avengers vs. X-Men” by none other than Scott Summers, according to the Associated Press.
The 11th issue of the limited series was released Wednesday.
Summers, aka Cyclops, was one of the team’s founding members and was a near constant member through its various incarnations.
In the current series, he’s been taken over by the Phoenix force and is lashing out, violently.
Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said it was not writer Brian Michael Bendis’ initial intent to kill off the character, but “as the story progressed, it became obvious that this had to be the last stand of Charles Xavier.”
He said the mortal blow will have ramifications that will reach into new titles coming this fall, including “Uncanny Avengers” and “All New X-Men” later this fall.

Ex-James Bond Roger Moore says wives abused him
Former James Bond actor Roger Moore has claimed he was a victim of domestic violence during his first two marriages.
According to Agence France-Presse, the 84-year-old British star, who first played agent 007 in 1973’s “Live and Let Die,” said his former wives Doorn Van Steyn and Dorothy Squires subjected him to a string of attacks in both of their doomed marriages.
Van Steyn, an ice skater who married Mr. Moore when he was 19, once threw a teapot at him, he told television presenter Piers Morgan in an interview due to be broadcast on Friday.
“She would scratch me,” the longest-running Bond told Mr. Morgan’s “Life Stories” chat show. “My mother was always petrified when I went home to see that I had more scars.”
Mr. Moore, who is on his fourth marriage, said that on one occasion Van Steyn attacked a doctor who was treating a cut on his hand.
“She said to him, ’Aren’t you going to do anything?’ and punched him,” he recalled. “Which made a change, because normally she punched me.”
Mr. Moore divorced Van Steyn in 1953 and soon after married Welsh singer Dorothy Squires, whom he described as having “a great temper.”
This marriage also was stormy, and he claimed she once hit him over the head with a guitar.
The actor went on to divorce Squires in 1968 and married Italian actress Luisa Mattioli the next year. The couple had three children but ended their marriage in 1996.
Mr. Moore has been married to Christina Tholstrup, a 71-year-old Scandinavian socialite, since 2002.
Squires died in 1998 and Van Steyn in 2010.

Pop star Avril Lavigne promises she will wear a “badass” wedding dress that she might make herself when she marries her fiance, rocker Chad Kroeger.

Of the 37-year-old Nickelback frontman’s proposal after a whirlwind romance, Miss Lavigne said: “It was really natural, and we met in the studio and were friends for a while, and one of our last days in the studio was when he proposed, and it was super romantic and it had a lot of meaning behind it.”
Miss Lavigne, 27, was mum on the subject of her ex, Brody Jenner, whose family she remains friendly with. She used one of his sisters, 15-year-old Kylie Jenner, to open and close her New York runway show.
