ALBANY, N.Y. — With the status of Terrell Thomas’ injured right knee uncertain, the New York Giants are hoping for the best and preparing to make changes in case the veteran cannot play this season.
Thomas reinjured his right anterior cruciate ligament for the third time in his career when he slipped in practice Sunday during the Super Bowl champions’ third training camp practice.
Initially, the Giants said Thomas reinjured his ACL and probably would have arthroscopic surgery.
He went to California to get a second opinion from the surgeon who reconstructed his ACL last year, and the five-year veteran plans to be examined by Alabama-based surgeon Dr. James Andrews next week, the Giants said.
If Thomas only stretched his ACL, there is hope that he could return.
Thomas, who missed all of last season after injuring the same ACL in a preseason game, was penciled in as a starting cornerback.
Prince Amukamara, last year’s top draft pick, Michael Coe and former Virginia Tech standout Jayron Hosley, the third-round draft pick, will get a chance to replace Thomas at cornerback.
Panthers part ways with injury-plagued tackle Otah
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Offensive tackle Jeff Otah’s contract was terminated by the Carolina Panthers after the former first-round draft pick failed a physical.
Carolina dealt Otah to the New York Jets on July 23 for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2013, but the trade was rescinded after Otah failed a physical, and he reverted to the Panthers’ roster.
Carolina selected the 6-foot-6, 340-pound Otah with the 19th pick in the 2008 NFL draft.
He’s missed 31 of the past 35 games because of a meniscus injury, finishing the past three seasons on injured reserve.
Saints’ Greer set for sports hernia surgery
METAIRIE, La. — New Orleans Saints first-team cornerback Jabari Greer will have sports hernia surgery after pulling his groin during practice this week, assistant head coach Joe Vitt said.
Greer was sent to see a doctor in Philadelphia for the procedure and should return in time for the regular season. Greer came up lame during practice Tuesday. Rookie receiver Nick Toon left Thursday’s practice with an apparent foot injury.
Injury to Texans DE Watt not believed to be serious
HOUSTON — Texans defensive end J.J. Watt dislocated his left elbow and will miss practice time, but the team doesn’t believe his injury is serious. Kubiak didn’t rule out Watt playing in the preseason but isn’t sure how long he’ll be out.
Watt started every game as a rookie last season and finished with 56 tackles and 5.5 sacks as the Texans reached the playoffs for the first time.
Tebow gets time in goal-line drills
CORTLAND, N.Y. — It was Tebow Time for the New York Jets in goal-line drills. The Jets provided a small glimpse for the first time during training camp into their plan for Tim Tebow on offense Thursday, as the backup quarterback ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to Josh Baker in a four-play sequence that got the crowd at SUNY Cortland fired up.
Lerner reaches deal to sell the Browns
A person with knowledge of the sale told the Associated Press that Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner has reached a deal to sell the team to Tennessee truck-stop magnate Jimmy Haslam III — a minority stockholder in the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
