Newt Gingrich plans to suspend his presidential campaign, following another poor showing in this week’s Republican primary contests.
“Newt Gingrich to suspend campaign next week,” R.C. Hammond, Mr. Gingrich’s campaign spokesman, said in an email to The Washington Times. “Laying out plans now how as a citizen he can best help stop Obama second term and win congressional majorities.”
Mr. Gingrich, a former House speaker, indicated in his election-night speech Tuesday that he would have to “look realistically” at his role in the race after Mitt Romney swept five more contests in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
The announcement leaves Rep. Ron Paul of Texas as Mr. Romney sole rival and ends a roller-coaster ride of a campaign for Mr. Gingrich that saw him go from the back of the pack to the front and back again — leaving him with $4.3 million in campaign debt.
