LONDON — British police have arrested a 30-year-old man in the phone hacking scandal involving the now-defunct News of the World tabloid.

Police say the man was arrested by appointment Friday on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept voicemail messages.

More than a dozen people have been arrested amid claims the newspaper eavesdropped on the mobile phone voicemail messages of celebrities, royals, politicians and crime victims.

The scandal forced the closure of the News of the World, a Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid.
