U.S. Open play continues throughout the day at Flushing Meadows, N.Y. (1 p.m. and 7 p.m., ESPN2) before the schedule starts filling up at night. The Nationals and Orioles open series against division foes as Washington hosts the New York Mets (7 p.m., MASN) and Baltimore visits Tampa Bay (7 p.m., MASN2). Meanwhile, there’s college football action in the Lone Star State as TCU visits Baylor (8 p.m., ESPN). Later, the U.S. men’s national soccer team takes on Costa Rica in a friendly (11 p.m., ESPN2).

1st: SATURDAY

The first college football Saturday of the year is highlighted by a pair of evening showdowns worthy of split-screen treatment, with Oregon taking on LSU (8 p.m., ABC) and Boise State facing Georgia (8 p.m., ESPN). Other games of note include Appalachian State at Virginia Tech (12:30 p.m., WDCA-20) and South Florida at Notre Dame (3:30 p.m., NBC). On the diamond, the Texas Rangers visit the Boston Red Sox (4 p.m., Fox) and the Nats continue their series against the Mets (7 p.m., MASN).

1st: SUNDAY

The final NFL-free Sunday until 2012 leaves us to sort through several other afternoon options, including the IRL’s Baltimore Grand Prix (2 p.m., Versus). Later, NASCAR gets a prime-time slot from Atlanta (7:30 p.m., ESPN). On the college gridiron, Marshall is at West Virginia (3:30 p.m., ESPN). Action on the diamond includes Nats-Mets (1:30 p.m., DC-50, MASN) and Orioles-Rays (1:30 p.m., MASN2). The final round of the PGA Tour’s Deutsche Bank Championship (3 p.m., NBC).
