A Silver Spring man who police said fired a gun inside his home while his 8-year-old son was inside and then refused to come out for three hours was charged Monday with attempted first-degree murder and reckless endangerment, according to court documents.
Officers were called at 10:40 p.m. Saturday to the 500 block of East Melbourne Avenue for the report of gunshots, Montgomery County officials said. Upon arriving, the officers saw Carlos Alexander Hernandez, 31, firing a gun inside his home, police officials said.
Officers Christopher Murray and Dean Skiba did fire their guns, police said, though they provided no details. Nobody was injured. Officers began communicating with Mr. Hernandez but he refused to come outside until about 2:15 a.m., when he surrendered, police spokeswoman Officer Janelle Smith said. Rifles and pistols were recovered from the home, she said.
Mr. Hernandez faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of reckless endangerment. He was denied bond at a hearing Monday, according to documents filed in District Court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 10.
Family members took custody of the boy after Mr. Hernandez was arrested, Officer Smith said.
Police had no information about what led to the incident.
Officer Skiba, a four-year department veteran, and Officer Murray, a six-year veteran, have been placed on routine administrative leave.
In 2009, Mr. Hernandez was arrested for violating a protective order and second-degree assault but the charges were dropped, according to county court records.
