From Dec. 1 through 6, the “Christmas Carol” cast will collect donations for Bread for the City, a local social services organization that provides food, clothing and medical care to needy D.C. residents, during curtain calls. The play runs through Jan. 3.
In addition, a direct donation to Bread for the City can be made through the Ford’s Theatre box office. In exchange for a $10 contribution, patrons can receive $5 off a single ticket to a performance from Dec. 29 through Jan. 3.
“It is truly fitting that we reflect the messages of charity, hope and love found in Dickens’ ’A Christmas Carol’ by addressing the needs within our own communities,” said Paul Tetreault, director of the Ford’s Theatre Society, in a press release. “Ford’s Theatre is pleased to partner with Bread for the City this holiday season and to give what we can to support Washington neighborhoods and families.”

Running for hunger
Thousands are expected to get moving Thursday for a good cause at SOME’s (So Others Might Eat) eighth annual Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger, a five-mile morning walk-run to benefit programs that help the homeless. The Little Turkey One-Mile Fun Run on the same morning will get the children involved.
John Adams, president of SOME, and Rob Carson, host of “The Carson Show” on Mix 107.3, will be among the participants. The event will begin at 8 a.m. on Ohio Drive Southwest between Independence Avenue and West Basin Drive, near the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.
Register online at www.some.org or on-site the morning of the run. Cost to participate is $25. (Event organizers have closed registration for participants who want their run to be timed.)
Proceeds from the run will benefit SOME’s dining room, where volunteers serve free, healthy meals to hundreds of homeless people daily.
H4-footed friends
People are not the only ones in need of a helping hand. On Tuesday, Hudson Restaurant’s executive chef, Ryan Arnold, will cook up a four-course meal to benefit Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, an all-volunteer nonprofit in the District that finds loving homes for homeless animals.
Tickets to a Lucky Dog Dinner, which costs $95 per person, can be purchased at www.hudson-dc.com.
The canine compassion will continue Dec. 6 as Cesar Millan, known to his television following on the National Geographic Channel as the “Dog Whisperer,” will team up with the Washington Humane Society to host a blanket and towel drive at George Mason University’s Patriot Center to keep sheltered animals warm this winter.
Volunteers will collect towels and blankets starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Patriot Center, two hours before Mr. Millan performs his PackPower Tour show.
